If you love Sports, you might have noticed Michael Phelps have some red/purple circles on his neck and back area while swimming in the Olympics a few years ago. Did you ever ask yourself what that was? Those red or purple circles are a result of a typical cupping session.
Myofascial Cupping has been around for thousands of years! There has been evidence dating back cupping in Ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Hindu writings. It is a therapeutic soft tissue therapy which involves an attachment of a glass or silicone cup to the skin through suction.
As a result of suction, there is a vaccuum effect which raises the the underlying tissues such as muscle, connective tissue, blood, and other fluids closer to the surface level helping bring nutrient rich blood to the area being treated.
Cupping is typically applied to the neck, arms, back, shoulders, sacrum, hips, legs, and around the joint areas. It is best used when the patient goes through active ranges of motion or exercises while having the cups placed on them for increased performance and improved range of motion.
